CLOTHING CLOSET

WACS Clothing Closet

Boosting Self-Esteem and Confidence Through Clothing

Growing up is tough. Growing up without the resources you need, including proper clothing, is even tougher. With our Clothing Closet, families with children ages 4–14 years old can shop in a boutique-like setting, once a month to pick out both new and like-new clothing items free of cost. This clothing service is guided by our mission to recognize the inherent dignity of all humans. Clients are invited to select items that meet their personal needs and style preferences. Great importance is placed on ensuring that only high-quality clothing makes its way onto our racks. We strive to delight our clients by keeping a clean and organized store, and providing friendly and helpful service.

History of Clothing Closet

What began in the fall of 2015 as the vision of Ingrid Williams and Kristin Rinderknecht to meet the needs identified by staff members of the Waukee Community School District, had become an organized effort to provide dignity and confidence to children and families through the distribution of free clothing to those in need throughout all of Dallas County.

By 2016, Dallas County Clothing Closet had opened a storefront at 43 NE Carefree Lane in Waukee. Over the course of 5  years, the store served hundreds of families.

In April of 2022, the Dallas County Clothing Closet retail location was closed and operations were moved to Waukee Area Christian Services. The now named, Clothing Closet, is the result of two nonprofits, serving many of the same clients, combining resources to create a single location where people can get help with both food and clothing.

The baton has been passed to WACS and we are excited and grateful to be able to carry on the mission of The Dallas County Closet. A client visiting WACS can now access food, clothing, hygiene products, basic health care, housing stability assistance, school essentials, outside services navigation and referrals, and a listening ear.

    Questions and Answers

How often can we visit the Clothing Closet? Registered clients may visit once a month.
Do you have clothing for adults? Not at this time.  Our space is limited so our current focus is on children.
If we don’t find the number of items we are allowed to take home, can we come again in the same month? Just like the Food Pantry, visits are limited to once a month.
Does your Clothing Closet replace the Dallas County Closet? The Dallas County Closet merged into Waukee Area Christain Services on April 1, 2022, in order to offer families food, clothing, medical services, and overall support in one place.
