Waukee Area Christian Services (WACS) provides compassionate, practical care to greater Des Moines’ west side, offering food and medical assistance to those struggling to make ends meet. Supported by area churches, businesses and community organizations, WACS includes a food pantry, free medical clinic, and community garden.
WAUKEE AREA CHRISTIAN FOOD PANTRY opened its doors in 2005, and has since provided more than (–) families with groceries and personal-care products. The pantry is open twice weekly, and serves those residing in the Waukee Community School District. In addition to helping its patrons with regular needs, the food pantry also operates special giving programs for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Back-to-School.
During the summer and fall, pantry shelves are supplemented by fresh produce grown under the direction of master gardeners at the nearby FRUITFUL VINE COMMUNITY GARDEN. Literally thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables have been harvested and enjoyed by pantry patrons over the past four growing seasons.
WACS also provides medical care though the WAUKEE AREA CHRISTIAN FREE CLINIC, a member of Free Clinics of Iowa. The clinic is open to anyone in need, at no cost, on Monday evenings. In 2011, the clinic received an “extreme makeover” by the Iowa Clinic Healthcare Foundation, so our patients now have a modern and professional setting in which to receive care from our staff of volunteer physicians and nurses.
All services of WACS are primarily volunteer-driven. We rely not only on donations of groceries and funding, but also of time. Please visit our Volunteer page for learn more.
